You\u2019ve probably already realized that not every mailpiece is going to be a perfect cube or rectangle.  Sometimes an item you need to send is going to have an irregular shape: a fishing pole, a tire, a hatbox.  How do you measure irregularly shaped items so that you remain compliant with USPS regulations and add the correct amount of postage to every shipment? We can help!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll probably run across the term of measurement known as girth. Critically, the total size of the package is the length plus the girth. Calculating the length and width of a package seems straightforward enough, but what about calculating its girth?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Girth <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Girth is the distance around the thickest part of a parcel. For example, if you\u2019re mailing a guitar case, this would be the measurement around the part of the box that contains the body of the guitar. Depending on the shape of your package, this will be calculated differently. When calculating the girth of a square or rectangular package, use this method:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Girth = (2 x Height) + (2 x Width)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To calculate the girth of a triangular package, use this method:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Girth = Sum of the 3 sides of the triangular package<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For tubes, the girth is the circumference of the tube (\u03c0 x diameter). In this case, pi or \u201c\u03c0\u201d is 3.14. The diameter is the \u201ccircle,\u201d the distance across the flat, circular side of the tube. Yikes! You didn\u2019t think you\u2019d have to worry about circumferences and diameters ever since you took geometry in high school.  Not to worry\u2014you can also measure a tube’s girth with measuring tape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Length, Width and Height <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Length is the longest side of the parcel\u2013if you have a fishing pole to send, this would be the length of the rod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Width is the second longest side of the parcel\u2014if you\u2019re sending a shoe box, the side of the box that faces the heel seat or heel base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Height is the \u201cstanding\u201d side of the parcel\u2014if you\u2019re measuring a tire, lay it flat on the ground.  You can use a ruler to measure the tire\u2019s height from the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Total Size Limits <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When using the Stamps.com software, you may spot some size limit warnings in the mail class descriptions. A mailing rule to live by: every USPS mail class will have different limits in terms of total size. For international mail, the limitations regarding total size will vary by country<\/strong> and by class<\/strong>. Step 1: Determine if the item is mailable<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n


<\/strong> Check USPS rules to confirm your item (like a rock, toy, or fruit) qualifies. Some items are restricted, perishable, or require special treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2: Secure postage directly on the item<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n


<\/strong> Attach postage directly to your item using NetStamps<\/a> or adhesive labels. USPS expects correct postage in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 3: Use tracking or barcode labels if possible<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If available, print a barcode label via Stamps.com to aid with tracking and processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 4: Consider wrapping or cushioning optional<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
